Anorgasmia
WHAT IS ANORGASMIA?
It is the recurrent failure to achieve an orgasm after a normal phase of arousal with adequate sexual stimulation.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OS ANORGASMIA?
Primary anorgasmia:Suffered by a woman who has never experienced a orgasm during sexual intercourse nor through masturbation.
Secondary anorgasmia: This is the systematic loss of orgasms which follows a period of experiencing orgasms in normal circumstances.
Anorgasmia con be absolute or situational. If it is absolute, the female is unable to reach orgasm through sexual intercourse nor clitoral stimulation. If it is situational she may experience orgasm but only under specific circumstances.

ORGANIC CAUSES OF ANORGASMIA
The physiology of orgasm is complex. There are a series of involuntary reflex contractions of certain muscles in the genital area located in the vagina. Any traumatism in that area as well as intake of drugs or prescription drugs may lead to organic causes that will prevent orgasm. This is not very common, only 5% of anorgasmias are of organic origin, the rest are due to psychological factors.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CAUSES OF ANORGASMIA
Orgasms can be inhibited by a female’s ambivalence toward her partner, by fear of abandonment, and/or sexual guilt amongst other reasons. Woman who suffer this condition frequently report a fear to lose control over their feelings and their behaviour. Other possible causes may stem from a repressive educational background, lack of sexual knowledge, anxiety, depression, etc.

CAN ANORGASMIA BE CURED?
Anorgasmia is treatable, providing the woman cooperates with the sexual therapist. The effectiveness of the treatment is of 95% which is a very high percentage considering the magnitude of the problem.

WHAT DOES TREATMENT CONSIST OF?
The treatment is orientated towards:

  • Getting rid of negative attitude and prejudices about sexuality in general and orgasm in particular.
  • Improve the couple’s relationship via an increased communication.
  • Sexual skills program: A series of exercises specifically designed for overcoming this dysfunction.

During the first sessions with the patient she will receive information about the psychological nature of the problem and she will be informed about how the couple must follow each phase of the therapy.
The female will be taught how to focus her attention on the sensations prior to orgasm and she will be develop a natural response that has remained inhibited. The end of the treatment is reached when the woman is able to enjoy her sexuality together with her partner.
